Berkshire ASP Overview

For years, many small business owners have tried to compete with large Fortune 1000 companies, but the lack of profit always seems to escape them. This is because Fortune 1000 companies can spread the cost of their expenses over thousands of employees. Their cost per employee is so much less then the small business owner. The small business owners end up with a meager bottom line, while the Fortune 1000 companies, are raking in the dough. That is why there are millions of small businesses, and so few large businesses. The small business owner just cannot compete. Or, can they?

When the Fortune 1000 company goes out and purchases a million dollar computer system, the cost for their 50,000 employees is $20 per employee. But, when the small business owner goes out an purchases a $100k computer system for his 50 employees his cost is $2,000 per employee. How can the small business owner compete with the Fortune 1000 company when the small business owner is spending 100 times as much money on computer expenses. Simple answer...they can't.

To add insult to injury, the Fortune 1000 company buys the best computer system, with the best software to achieve the maximum efficiency for their company. The small business owner, cannot afford the expensive hardware and software, and must compromise with the "lite" version of hardware and software, thus sacrificing a significant amount of money off the bottom line to poor efficiency.

To make matters worse, the Fortune 1000 company can employee highly-skilled MIS employees to extract even more money and efficiency out of their computer system. Most small Business owner cannot afford one MIS employee, where the Fortune 1000 company has a staff of specialized MIS employees in multiple areas. Some specialize in hardware; Others in networking; Others in applications software; Others in operating systems; Others in software development; Others in credit card risk management; etc.

Most small businesses are good at their business, but when it comes to running a computer system and software, they fail. A study was done that showed that over 98% of all small businesses had some type of computer failure that could have been avoided if they had the MIS skills to know of the danger they were in. Some failed due to poor disk drives; poor cooling in the computer room; poor quality of back up tapes; Or worse, no backup at all for months at a time. And, the list just keeps going on and on.

And, if this isn't enough, the Fortune 1000 company has the ability to hook all their branch offices together with communications lines, and run their entire company off one main computer system. The Fortune 1000 company achieves even higher efficiency by hooking as many employees into one computer system as possible. With high-speed computers and inexpensive communications lines (T1, broadband, Cable, DSL, Satelite, etc), this is very easy to achieve today. Most small business owners are using less then 1% of the CPU power of their computer systems to run their company.

I can see you sitting there and wondering why someone doesn't put together a high quality computer system and applications software, and allow multiple companies to run the same software. Just like an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Well, someone has. This is what the Berkshire Applications Service Provider (ASP) program is all about. It provides many small businesses with a better ecomony of expenses for their computer environment. Most Berkshire Users spend significantly less on the computer expenses, and gain more efficiency. Obviously, each company will achieve different results.

Case Study The Government Trap

This is a true story of a honest corporation that got dragged down to the ground by an employee who didn't know the legal rules of dealing with the government. ABC Company #1, sells items to corporations and governments. John Doe, was a salesman at the company, who was easy going, and friendly, as most salespeople are suppose to be. John was on the road most of the time taking orders from corporations, and local government officials. He would often take some of these customers to lunch, because he liked their company. One sunny morning the FBI comes storming into their office and arrest John Doe, the owner, and other employees. To collect evidence, the FBI, grabs the computer server, along with the backup tapes. Where does this leave ABC Company #1? I'll tell you where, out of business. They can't even take orders or even give pricing, because they lost their computer server.

If they had been a Berkshire User, they could continue to use their computer system, because the computer server belongs to Berkshire, in a non-disclosed location. The FBI will have to get a court ordered supeana to get a "copy" of your data from Berkshire. And, in this case, they will ONLY get data in the special format that we use (non-readable text). But more importantly, they will not be able to "cripple" your company, to add pressure to your employees and your company into a plea-bargin arrangement.
